“I know that there is nothing better for them, than to rejoice and to do good as long as they live. And also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy good in all his labor. It is the gift of God.” vs12-13
It is God’s gift that makes us happy! This is not something that we do for ourselves; it is the gift of grace for Christ’s sake. Sometimes, we pray, “God be merciful to me, the sinner”. Other times, we rejoice in righteousness and boast in God (Rom 5:1). Either way, He hears us for Christ’s sake, and He gives us joy by faith only.
It’s not the circumstances but the HEART that determines our happiness, and the heart fixed on Christ by faith will be happy, assuredly. You will have peace because God is with you, not only in doctrine but also in Spirit… not only in what you know but what you feel.
1 The gospel is not an empty thing, leaving us to find our pleasure in the world: it is all fulfilling, internal power by the Spirit. He calms the raging sea. John 6:20-21, “But He said to them, ‘It is I. Don’t be afraid!’ Then they were willing to take Him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading.” Take Him with you to the job, bring Him home, and use Him to fight your lusts and temptations (1 Tim 5:2).
He will be with you in sweet power, as you give yourself to prayer, instead of rebellion. He will be with you in peace for the Spirit cannot be stopped. Paul said, “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom 15:13).” Your circumstances, like my own, are NOT more mighty than God. Give your heart to Him by faith, and He will give you joy.
2 We must be tried and troubled: There is a time for that, but it doesn’t mean that we are forsaken (Eccl 3:1). It cannot be all sweets, but we still have the Comforter. He says, “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper to be with you forever (John 14:16).” Friends may fall off and people may leave, but the Son has covenanted to be with us forever.
Take the promises to the throne, incessantly, and rejoice BEFORE the battle is won: it is sure! Just like Israel danced, laughed, and praised the Lord before the battle, even so, go by faith against your enemies, and pick up the spoils (2 Chron 20:25)! God’s cast them into utter confusion, and you will see it, as your sins are forgiven. “You do not have to fight this battle. position yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD. he is with you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Tomorrow, go out to face them, for the LORD is with you (2 Chron 20:17).” Nothing can stand against Him. There is no power on earth or in hell that can take away what Christ died to give you. Only believe, take it, and receive.
3 It doesn’t matter that we’re unworthy: He is worthy. It doesn’t matter that we’re feeble. He is strong. We’ve squandered everything, and He restores our soul. We deserve death, but He deserves to raise us from the dead (Heb 13:20). Everything in the gospel is because of Christ, by the grace of God, and by His power, so we have it all, day by day, as we come to Him in the gospel.
Cast your cares at His feet, and watch Him heal them (Matt 15:30). Confess your sins, and watch Him make you righteous and clean. Do not forget His power, daily, and you’ll be happy with the strength that He gives. Vanity will not overtake you (1 Cor 7:9). He’ll give you rejoicing, so you can obey, and you’ll be a testimony unto Him. Believe the gospel, and you’ll see God’s glory.
Do not fear: He’s promised to be with you. Take the promise and see it happen.
