“Your Lips” (Song 4:3)

microphone“Your lips are like a thread of scarlet and your mouth is comely. Your temples are like a piece of a pomegranate behind your veil.” vs3

Your lips are beautiful. The Lord has taught you the gospel, and you speak it. He’s given you sincerity, so that you speak what you’ve seen and heard, what you believe yourself, instead of as an imposter (Acts 4:21). You love Him: You don’t only talk, but you do His commands. You have the speech of knowledge, so that you know the gospel and tell it forth. You have been blessed to be beautiful by the Lord, and He recognizes it – communing with you in comforting words by grace.  Your vileness is punished, and He sees you as a new creation. See yourself that way – utterly beautiful to the Lord, as you speak of Him! It doesn’t matter what others think! Testify of the Lord. Paul said, “For to God we are the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing (2 Cor 2:15).”

1     Preach the truth in love. You already please Him, so don’t be concerned about anyone else! Have an audience of One, as you do good (Matt 6:1). Do not compromise a word and say nothing of self, giving glory to Christ alone. Spurgeon said, I am always very jealous about this matter ; if we do not, as a church and congregation, if we do not, as individuals, always give God the glory, it is utterly impossible that He should continue to work by us. Many wonders have I seen, but I never yet saw a man who abrogated the honour of his work to himself, whom God did not leave sooner or later.” Do not get proud in your heart, but TELL what you know clearly, so that others might be saved. We have our portion in Christ, so let us do good to others.

Do not fear what they say: Please Him. Christ is worthy because He alone saves – the Eternal God, the Almighty – and He is in charge of all things for our benefit (Rom 8:28). He is the reason we’re not damned, have light instead of darkness, and He is why we’re speaking – not to please man, but Him who loved us and washed us from our sins. Paul said, “For am I now trying to win the favor of people, or God? Or am I striving to please people if I were still trying to please people, I would not be a slave of Christ (Gal 1:10).” Using words for His glory BEAUTIFIES our mouth. You have it, now speak accordingly.

2     Everyone who believes has right words! You don’t have to be eloquent to glorify Him. It can be, “Amen”, or, “Lord, save me”, as you hear the truth! It’s as simple as prayer offered for Christ’s sake, even if we don’t know what to ask properly (Rom 8:26).

Do not be ashamed of your ignorance: you know Christ. Don’t let the Devil silence you because you’re small and insignificant. He gives you doubts to keep you quiet, but you know sovereign grace, so SPEAK UP. Do not be afraid: What you have is gospel knowledge, which all great men will one day envy! Paul says, “On the contrary, we speak God’s hidden wisdom in a mystery, a wisdom God predestined before the ages for our glory (1 Cor 2:7).” You have the words of eternal life, and those that hear you hear God. Do not be afraid of their wisdom for they don’t have any, or they’d never have murdered the Son of God (1 Cor 2:8). You know more than all the ancients because you know Christ, being taught by God Himself. He has shown you the hidden wisdom of scripture – how to overcome sin, how to get to heaven, and how to please God by faith in Christ. Be utterly confident and bold about what you know: No man can stand against you because the word of the Lord is sure: these are tried words, proven faithful, and they’ll endure forever. Ps 12:6, “The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in an earthen furnace, purified seven times.”

3     We speak the truth because we know it. He says, “Your temples are like a piece of a pomegranate behind your veil (Song 4:3).” You have fruitful, submissive knowledge. You are not an arrogant beast, spouting scripture to exalt yourself, but you have the Son on the inside. You know what it’s like to be forgiven, to endure trial, and to conquer by mysterious grace, so you speak uprightly (Ps 116:10). You have God’s testimony in Jesus Christ, so you speak, not in hypocrisy, but in power.

You and I are like Paul, whom the Lord told, “I will rescue you from the people and from the Gentiles. I now send you to them to open their eyes (Acts 26:17-18).” We’ve been sent with knowledge they don’t have, knowledge that saves sinners, and it is unstoppable! “Therefore, let it be known to you that this saving work of God has been sent to the Gentiles; they will listen (Acts 28:28)!” Just like Paul was kept to fulfill his mission, writing letters in prison, you and I will be kept until our appointed end, and the word of God will not fail. The elect shall hear and souls will be encouraged because God will use the knowledge He’s given (Luke 1:77).

Let it out and be bold! Keep silent no more! God has absolute power and authority over devils, and they scatter as He speaks. Some get angry and resist, but they will come out all the same as appointed. No man has power to resist His revealed love, and when He conquers the heart, sinners are glad. Are you fearful? Speak TO God so you can speak FOR Him. Tell Him your concerns and your fears, then look up for opportunity to show His strength. Use open doors and confess your sins of cowardice, but do not be stopped from your mission. You have gospel knowledge and a beautiful voice to God: Use it.

Brothers, we are beautiful. Now we have speech to backup Scripture and say what He’s done for us personally. Speak of the Christ that you know. Delight God.
