“A Skillful Workman” (Song 7:1)

Christ is the “skillful workman” who’s made us what we are today. Do we have beautiful feet that preach the gospel? Christ has made us so. Do we walk uprightly and grow in grace? Christ is the reason.

Every blessing the believer has is because of Christ and Him crucified. He took the penalty of sin, so He could give us the rewards of righteousness. He paid for our transgressions, so He could give us what His blood has earned. In everything, we are the poor sinner, and He’s the One showing mercy.

Look at the sinners in the Bible and realize that this is us, every day, as we confess our transgressions and come to Him in need. We are blind Bartimaeus who cannot see, and we are crying out for mercy. We are the demon possessed, locked in chains, until the Son passes by with power. We’re the lame man at the pool, waiting helplessly with no man to help us, until He picks us out for mercy. We are the woman bowed down 18 years and unable to lift herself up, until He says, “Woman, you are free of your disability.’ Then He laid His hands on her, and instantly she was restored and began to glorify God (Luke 13:12-13).”

I was talking to God today, as a believer, though helpless.  I know the doctrine but cannot give it life. “I will to do good”, Paul says, “but how to perform it, I do not know (Rom 7:18).” We must wait at the foot of mercy and look to Him. We must preach with a broken heart trusting Christ and not our strength. We must be nothing, so we can be everything that He makes us, and this is the key of Christian living: To keep your eyes on Christ, as you did at the start, as the Reason and Fulfiller of everything. He says, “Therefore, as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him (Col 2:6-7).” He is why you’re saved. He is why you have power and usefulness. He is the One we praise by the Spirit to the Father. “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father (Eph 2:18).” We get all things from God because of Him. He’s the Reason all things exist. “For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him (Col 2:19).”

Brothers, give credit where it is due! You are special because of Christ.
