“Manifested His Glory” (John 2:1-11)

“Now as the chief waiter tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it is from (but the servants that had dipped-out the water knew), the chief waiter summons the bridegroom, 2: 10 and says to him, Every man first placHUYs the good wine on the table, and whenever they are drunken, then the inferior. But you have kept the good wine until now. 2: 11 This was the beginning of the signs which Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory, and his disciples believed in him.” vs9-11

We believe after Jesus shows us His glory. We cannot believe, until we see Someone Worthy to be trusted. He must unveil Himself to us as having power over sin and risen from the dead. He must show us that He’s gracious, so we can love Him back. Everything in the gospel is by revelation! It is not by intellect or natural reason: It is God coming and convincing us that He is right.

I was struggling as a young religious person, before I heard the gospel, trying to fight the evolution I was learning in college. I took a geography course and had my “faith” rattled by the illusionary movement of tectonic plates. I realized that I wasn’t sure the Bible could be trusted, so I contacted Christian scientists for an explanation. However, before the answer arrived, I went to a sovereign grace conference and heard the gospel! Now, I believed God: If He could raise Jesus from the dead (and He did) for the salvation of His elect… If He could conspire the GREATEST WISDOM and give Christ to die a propitiation, then He could surely create the world by speaking. I reasoned from the greater to the lesser because I believed God’s glory in putting away sin was the greatest and most powerful thing I’d ever heard! I never doubted creation again, as it is written, “By faith we understand that the universe was created by God’s command, so that what is seen has been made from things that are not visible (Heb 11:3).” Now, we know the dry land was formed out of water, not because it makes sense to the natural mind, but because we see God in the gospel – able to do all things, and surely He will not lie (Ps 136:6).

Have you seen the glory of God in Jesus Christ? Do you behold Him everyday? This is the key to life: it is knowing God saved you for Christ’s sake, relying on the Spirit, and it is giving glory to Christ. If you’ve seen His mercy, then you’ll be merciful. If you know that He washes your feet, then you’ll wash others. He says, “I assure you: A slave is not greater than his master, and a messenger is not great than the one who sent him (John 13:16).” If you see Him saving by a power that’s not yours, then you’ll rely on His power as you serve sinners.

Do not be thrown off by the wisdom of man! Jesus turned water into wine, just like He turns His word into the finest thing that we’ve ever heard. We hear grace in Jesus and say, “You have kept the good wine until now (vs10).’ I’ve chased and drunk the things of this world, but nothing satisfies like this!”
